When I was young, I had difficulty pronouncing my Ls. To assist my speech, my family had me recite a tongue twister that began "Little Lazy lizards..." Whether it truly helped me with pronunciation, or just provided entertainment to my bemirthed family I am not sure, though I am now quite capable of pronouncing the letter L. Below are a few of the lizards I encountered this past weekend in Central Texas. The Texas Spotted Whiptails and the Texas Spiny Lizard were encountered at the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center in San Antonio. The Texas Horned Lizard was in Poteet, the strawberry capital of Texas. The Green Anoles and the Mediterranean Gecko were both in my backyard in Austin. This was my first encounter with a Texas horned Lizard (Horny Toad), despite having wandered Central Texas trails for some 18 years. I guess I was always in the wrong place. (And no, I am not the one holding the Horned Lizard in the main picture). The Gecko is currently living inside my composter, which I assume provides a lifetime supply of insects and other arthropods. The Whiptails belie the "lazy" part of my little lizard mantra - most times they refuse to stand still long enough to get a good shot; rather they like to wait until a millisecond before the shutter clicks to start skittering across the ground.
